When this resource fits

Use this option when you need purposeful secondary English cover work at short notice, or a close-reading lesson that can run without building a new novel unit. The pack is organised as four lessons each for Frankenstein, Dracula and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Each has a line-numbered passage and student analysis work, rather than a generic worksheet asking for plot recall.

Analytical focus

  • Frankenstein: Victor's ambition, the secret of life, the Creature's awakening and their glacier confrontation.
  • Dracula: the Gothic threshold, Mina and the New Woman, the castle encounter, and Lucy's transformation.
  • Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde: doors and duality, a murder investigation, the cabinet confrontation and Jekyll's statement.

A classroom approach

For a substitute lesson, make the passage and analytical question the centre of the task. Students should be able to point to a phrase, explain its effect and justify an interpretation. The included model answers, discussion cues, exit tickets and grading guidance help the covering teacher keep the focus on evidence rather than improvised busywork.

A discussion question to try: How does the writer control what the reader knows, fears or misinterprets in this Gothic extract?

Compare before choosing

Choose this for emergency cover across three Gothic texts. If you are planning a sustained study of one novel with assessments across several arguments, compare the Dracula and Wuthering Heights units instead.
